Is toob live or just starting to build in Southampton?
Southampton was previously announced as the launch city for toob and those reading the local press could be forgiven for thinking that it is all live due to descriptions of the network being operational.
The reality is a lot more boring and it looks to be that the build is now starting and while its possible there may be some premises in the central Southampton initial build area with access it is a very small number.
roadworks.org does show work for the build scheduled both in central areas and areas like Bitterne so it is just a question of time before lots of people in Southampton will have the option. We might seem negative but with other FTTP builds it is not unusual for a small core network around their major asset to go live quickly and only see the ability to order appear many months later.
Southampton already has extensive Virgin Media coverage and ultrafast options of 350 Mbps or 500 Mbps available to some 85.8% of premises and their is also full fibre options available to 3.6% of premises. The trick for toob seems to be aggressive pricing of just £25/m (18 month contract) for its 900 Mbps symmetric full fibre service.
We will after hitting publish on this news item add a basic ISP listing for toob and as with all other FTTP roll-outs keep an eye out for user activity.
Update 11th September: 4:30pm We have been contacted by toob as they want to highlight that they are not linked with Neos. Neos shows up across many of the areas where we had expected toob to be rolling out, so we have asked for clarification on this, since if Neos is nothing do with the toob roll-out it may be someone else is looking at lots of telecoms streetworks in the city. No update on where the service is under test just yet, so for now it is only possible to register interest (with no commitment to buy) on the toob website.
