UK broadband speed test results for June 2019

The big question in the UK broadband scene is if we build a full fibre network will the public use it and for the public it is about what sort of speeds will I see. Today with our monthly round-up of broadband package speeds seen from users of our speed test we can share what we are observing and the usual reminder that because so many people test using Wi-Fi in the home that our median figures may be a little lower than some might expect, the top 20% speed is a better indicator of the speeds that those connecting using Ethernet should expect to see.

On the question of whether people will use full fibre with Q2 ending a couple of days ago we will on Wednesday share our analysis of the different technologies people are using across the UK and showcase how different this split in a fast council area versus a slow one.

For those not familiar with the quality score, this is a measure of the variance of the download speed during the course of the test, so those with low scores of 0.1 to 0.2 have very stable speeds, where as those scoring grades C and higher have wildly varying speeds during the course of the test. The general rule is that using Wi-Fi or a mobile service generally means your speeds are more variable and this is reflected in the scores seen for wireless based services, the exception continues to be the EE VDSL2/FTTC services where there is a very slow ramp up to the median speeds.

If your favourite provider is missing then this will be due to the sample size being too small for inclusion. There is some housekeeping planned, we had hoped to share an aggregate 5G speeds figure but the slice and dice of the data did not work in the run done on the 1st, so we will look back at what went wrong, we can see 5G handsets running speed tests so will have some data to share.

The BT Essential FTTC and FTTP 40/10 service is not listed but it does look fairly popular and therefore we will code up a split for the FTTC 55/10 and FTTC 40/10 products for the BT line up - so the BT Superfast 1 figures will climb once those obviously on the slower tier are split out.

We will keep an eye out in a months time to see if the upload speed changes are visible on the Virgin Media cable broadband products and if the roll-out has covered a lot of people we may need to re-teach the system how to split the Virgin Media servies.
