Sky renames broadband packages and launches buddy option

Sky has renamed its broadband packages ahead of any launch of its ultrafast products

  • Sky Broadband is now Sky Broadband Essential i.e. ADSL2+
  • Sky Fibre Max is now Sky Broadband Superfast i.e. 40/10 and 80/20 products

The change for most is that there is a new £2.50/m Sky Broadband Boost option. While this is an option people may find the Sky Broadband Boost automatically added to their packages, so for those ordering pay attention and remove the option if you don't want the features. Sky Broadband Boost adds the following:

  • Broadband Buddy - an app to let you control screen time for your family
  • Proactive Service - apparently Sky will find and fix any broadband issues so customers don't have to
  • Premium Service Visits - flexible engineer visits e.g. evenings and weekends
  • Mobile Data for outages - 2GB added to your Sky Mobile account for free if broadband cuts out
  • After 18 month minimum term Boost costs £5/m

The proactive service and premium service visits as a paid option may make some people feel that Sky is going to treat those who do not take the option as second class customers. A lot hinges on what exactly will happen with these two options, since if this is just a 'Sky' engineer that can attend they cannot fix Openreach network faults.

In the usual annual price rise that has been feature of the past it might have been better to add 50p/m for all customers and include the two repair options. What we suspect happened is that Sky may have considered this but the price sensitivity of the market is such they thought enough customers would leave if the price was to go up when so many other providers are doing fixed price guarantees.

There is a final addition and its Sky Broadband Wi-Fi Optimisation and for a one off £120 charge or 10 months at £12/m someone from Sky Tech Team will visit the home and 'adjust' the Sky equipment and install extra equipment to give good Wi-Fi coverage to all the home. Hopefully the extra equipment will be a decent mesh/access point system rather than the old boosters that were OK a few years but now deserve to found in pound shops only.

In the past when we've done checks on the packages with test orders, slow lines e.g. those with estimated speeds below 30 Mbps would be offered the 40/10 service at a lower price point but today on looking at a line with a 16 to 27 Mbps speed range the price was the same as those getting faster speeds i.e. £27/m.

Sky are waste of time. They loving keep in secret! But sadly it won't happen for any Ultrafast 160/330/1000 until end of this year!

I had a similar thing last year when I moved - new house was ONLY FTTP and I was 6 months in an 18 month contract.

As they couldn't offer the Fibre service, or an ADSL service they let me out of contract.

Are you aware that Ofcom, as told me by TalkTalk, are restricting super fast bb?
If true it will be for all ISPs and prossibly based on places like flats not being able to fully take advantage of super fast(ish!)

Assuming this is the same conversation as is happening on the forums...

Ofcom is NOT restricting superfast broadband at all.

What is happening is that where ISP may in the past have miss sold people their up to 76 service but people are only connecting at under 40 Mbps they are moving people to the slower product i.e. a 40/10 service

For those on 40/10 product but getting sub 24 Mbps speeds some providers may move them to a differently named product, but their speeds will not slow down.

With knowing your connection speed hard to say more
