Fifteen more exchanges with G.fast ultrafast broadband are now live
It seems that after a dip in popularity or the pace of the roll-out things may be picking up again with the G.fast roll-out as we have found another 15 exchanges with live G.fast pods and the number of premises able to order 100 Mbps or faster has increased to 1,759,111 premises from 1,708,026 on 26th April.
The new exchanges are:
- Cuckoo Oak
- North Finchley
- St Ives
- Yardley Gibbon
The number of live pods has jumped from 6,231 to 6,454 in the last two weeks, not all of the increase is down to the new exchanges, some pods are on exchanges with existing pods that are live. Our broadband maps and checkers are up to date apart from a little more rendering needed for St Ives and Wallingford at the highest zoom levels.
With Openreach declaring 2,020,000 premises passed by G.fast earlier this week in the BT Group financials clearly there are perhaps another 1,000 to 1,200 live pods out in the wild we need to spot.
G.fast while unpopular if you adhere to the full fibre path does offer a fast upgrade path until such time as full fibre appears and it is set to exist beyond the WLR switch off expected in 2025 simply because the reality is that there will be buildings where Openreach is refused access to install the final drop for full fibre. The interesting part will be if VDSL2 is turned off in different areas whether the spectrum used can be recovered and give G.fast a speed and range boost.
