Problems and solution for Vodafone Home Broadband customers
If you are a Vodafone UK home broadband customer on the morning of Saturday 26th January and have no broadband then its likely you have no internet connection and are reading this using your mobile phone or a neighbours connection, the reason being there appears to be a major problem with something in the core network.
The symptons are that the broadband router is happily saying you are connected and while you may manage to get the occassional site to open it will then stop seconds later or just never work at all.
The solution: Switching to an alternate DNS provider works around the problem, different DNS servers are 184.108.40.206 and 220.127.116.11 which are both run by Google. Alternatively visit use.opendns.com which has details of their servers and instructions for most operating systems, you can reach the opendns instructions via its IPv4 address http://18.104.22.168
That changing the DNS suddenly makes connections work reliably again suggests that the issue is with the Vodafone DNS server(s) or the network segment that houses them. WIth DNS being used for so many content filtering e.g. parental controls, pirated content, illegal content it is possible that something there has failed causing a knock on effect.
In terms of speed test volume, it is too early in the day to say if usage by Vodafone customers is done in terms of volume and with some intermittent access we may actually see a spike in use as people try to test to find out if the problem is affecting throughput speeds.
Update Sunday 27th January By Saturday evening everything appeared to be back to normal at Vodafone. Looking at the speed test results for the day the average (median) speed was towards the top of the normal daily range at 34.3 Mbps download and 7.4 Mbps upload for the provider. The test volume during the day was higher than we would usually expect, as people sought out resources to test their connection but by the evening the testing rate returned to the usual daily pattern.
