December 2018 update on broadband coverage levels across the UK, nations and regions

We have failed at getting the Christmas decorations up again, but hopefully all the work on keeping track of all the broadband roll-outs will make up for that.

The volume of new VDSL2 cabinets is remaining low and the area they cover is also a lot smaller than this time last year. The positive aspect of this slow down that we are seeing more FTTP from Openreach with a number of counties in the BDUK phase 2 and beyond stages adding a decent amount. We have also seen the start of more Fibre First activity in Northern Ireland in addition to FTTP helping those struggling on line lines in the rural areas.

The situation with the broadband USO depends on whether you count properties that can get decent ADSL2+ download speeds our figures do not include ADSL2+ due to our position that ADSL2+ does not meet the upload criteria but if you ignore this the number with sub 10 Mbps speeds drops to 566,903 premises.

Our tracking of the Openreach ultrafast footprint has a total of 1,838,267 premises, made of up 1,201,985 G.fast premises and 636,282 FTTP premises. We now have the latest ONS postcode dataset, so that means we can integrate the new postcodes from August, September and October and if the recent trend of full fibre continues this may see an extra 20,000 premises added to Openreach total.

Comments

If possible it would be good to see the change in sub 2Mb and Sub USO over the previous month, like you have for the Full fibre column. This would give a clearer picture of whether the good are getting better or the awful are improving.

By looking back I can see the UK drop this month is 5053 2Mb and 3214 USO. But good to see the area picture

It is good to see the sub-USO numbers falling, but with a monthly drop of this size it will take over 20 years to upgrade them all. The rollout needs to be an order of magnitude higher.
