UK broadband speed test results for November 2018

We may be a couple of days late with the results for November but December is proving to be a busy month and therefore it has taken a day or two longer to find the time to publish the results from the broadband testing during the November period.

The standard pattern of full fibre services and other fixed connection speed services such as DOCSIS dominating the top of the table continues. The Vodafone Gigafast service does make the monthly tables, but there needs to be a much larger expansion of the roll-out and subsequent takeup for us to start splitting out the various speed tiers and similar with the BT Ultrafast 1 & 2 products which we combine into a single result currently.

(*) These two services have small test volumes but are included to show that we are getting closer to the point where the customer numbers mean they will hopefully be a regular feature in the monthly results. For the G.fast results in October we published the Q3 results and the volume of tests in October was such that we can share the monthly result.

(**) The quality score for Community Fibre is not shown for November but should return for the December results, this is due to changes in how the score needs to be measured for this service, since it appears for the non Gigabit services there is a short burst of very high speeds at the start of the test, which of course affects the quality score (variance).

For those not familiar with the quality score, this is a measure of the variance of the download speed during the course of the test, so those with low scores of 0.1 to 0.2 have very stable speeds, where as those scoring grades C and higher have wildly varying speeds during the course of the test. EE also scores oddly and this is due to some quirk of their hardware or network configuration that means people see a a very slow ramp up to the connections maximum speed, in terms of how the public would see this is web pages being slow to start loading but after things will speed up. Another way to think of the quality score is that for day to day web browsing a grade A connection even if half the speed of another service with a Grade C connection will often feel faster to use.
