October 2018 update on broadband coverage levels across the UK, nations and regions

1 in 20 premises across the UK can now get a full fibre (fibre to the premises) connection which is a significant step up on the previous month, but there is a cautionary note that around two thirds of the improvement in the last four weeks has been down to adding the Virgin Media RFOG areas to the figures.

The last month has also seen us add the first part of Milton Keynes to see the Vodafone Gigafast roll-out and while we are still integrating the new build premises from the last quarter we are seeing a much higher proportion of full fibre i.e. for the new postcodes in 2018 53.15% of the premises had a full fibre option, Openreach GEA-FTTP dominates at 48.93% but there are some 4.39% where two or more FTTP providers are present.

The pattern of ultrafast broadband coverage rising faster than the superfast coverage levels continues and is driven by the amount of full fibre that is appearing in areas that already have superfast broadband options. The good news for those who have made promises about the UK reaching 97% or 98% superfast coverage levels is that we expect this to now happen between September 2019 and December 2020 i.e. the pace of superfast broadband delivery has improved compared to the start of 2018.

(*) The figure for the South West has jumped because the Airband contracts had previously only been counted in the 'fibre' column but as the contracts are for superfast broadband we have added them to the superfast columns too now. There is some debate over the footprint we have in our system and we are expecting a refreshed footprint in the next month or so and the expectation is that the footprint will shrink, in the meantime if you live in the South West and have tried to get the fixed wireless installed and it failed to work please do get in touch so we update our footprint as soon as possible.

The full fibre figure change figures are very likely to revert to their usual pace when we report again in November, since while the Virgin Media RFOG footprint is still increasing, as are the footprints of the numerous full fibre providers this month saw almost two years of RFOG rolled into the figures. It is possible that we may seen blocks of Openreach FTTP from the Fibre First programme appear and Vodafone may do another part of Milton Keynes.

For those wondering what the Openreach G.fast footprint is in terms of premises passed then we know of 3,040 live pods that should provide 100 Mbps or faster to some 885,549 premises (a jump of 166,548 premises in the last four weeks and a change of 74,312 in the last 6 days alone). The big jump in the G.fast footprint in the last week suggests that there was a big push to commission pods that people have been seeing in place for some time now to meet end of quarter deadlines. The Openreach FTTP footprint was sitting at 603,343 premises and we look forward to a month when we can report multiple areas going live via the Fibre First programme.
