UK broadband speed test results for September 2018

The usual pattern of FTTP providers selling Gigabit services filling the top of the table continues which is no real surprise, the change this month is while the monthly amount of G.fast tests is still low by aggregating across three months we can fit them into the table and G.fast is outperforming Virgin Media VIVID 200.

Another change is that with the increasing availability of the Openreach FTTP products we are starting to see some of the medium sized providers get into the table. The gap between the Openreach FTTC and its equivalent FTTP product is visible and would be larger if Wi-Fi did not exist and we were all tied by an Ethernet cable to our broadband routers like back in 2000.

If you are a broadband provider moaning that your ISP is not listed the usual reason is that we did not see enough valid tests from customers during the month. We hope that in a year or two we will able to remove the ADSL/ADSL2+ services due to them not meeting the enough tests criteria i.e. reflecting that almost everyone has upgraded to a FTTC or better service.

If we were to rank the results based on the volume of tests in September the most popular package was the Sky Fibre FTTC 40/10, followed by the BT Superfast FTTC 55/10 product then BT ADSL/ADSL2+, Virgin Media VIVID 100, TalkTalk Fibre FTTC 40/10, BT Superfast 2 FTTC 80/20, TalkTalk ADSL2+, Virgin Media 50, Virgin Media 70 and Virgin Media 150.

The reality that the fastest products are not the most popular is reflected in the gulf between the Q3 2018 mean download speed of 33.4 Mbps (median 23.3 Mbps) and the mean download speed of 200 Mbps for the UK if everyone bought the top speed tier available to them. The 200 Mbps figure does take into account the effect of distance on VDSL2, ADSL and ADSL2+ technologies. For those who love to do international comparisons and league tables these invariably do not look at the speeds sold to the public. What speeds people are choosing (and the technology where they have a choice) is invariably the missing component for example if Virgin Media dropped all its packages with connection speeds below 100 Mbps and automatically upgraded people the UK average would improve suddenly and dramatically.
