Average peak time speeds for UK broadband services in August 2018

There are two sets of average speeds in reality, what the broadband providers want us to see in all the adverts and then reality of what people get once you add in all the variables such as line length, Wi-Fi, congestion etc. Our broadband speed test results provide the later and as such are a useful way of knowing how you compare with others.

This list is much shorter than the sixty or more packages we feature at the beginning of each month simply because the ASA/CAP definition of a peak time window running from 8pm to 10pm is used and this means for many packages we are not seeing enough tests to share the results with a reasonable degree of confidence. It is likely that in October we will actually publish a set from Q3 2018 if this means we can add a few more packages that are not normally listed.

The main change we noticed for August was an improvement in the quality score for Virgin Media users, generally 0.1 to 0.2 across the various products, the improvement means that download speeds were slightly more constitent during the period of the test, suggesting that quality of service may have improved (more detail on the quality of score is in our speed test FAQ). Though it should be pointed out that in common with the testing providers use in their advertising we are looking at the multiple download test and when we compare our single download test versus multiple download test you get a better idea of who are the good and bad providers, a single download is akin to streaming video whereas the multiple download should reflect the sort of performance you get when downloading from places like Steam.

The various full fibre services do appear on our internal tables, but the numbers testing within the two hour window is still too small to include but with the roll-outs of FTTP ramping up we may be able to talk about these speeds and G.fast more later in the year.

A small footnote, the speeds that BT use in its advertising of the Superfast Fibre 1 and 2 services is the same irrespective of whether the underlying technology is FTTP or FTTC, our tables normally do split out the two technologies with FTTP missing from this peak time table due to low volumes. In the future as the FTTP footprint increases if BT continue to use the same speeds in their advertising we may add a combined FTTP/FTTC figure, while still splitting the FTTC and FTTP.
