August 2018 update on broadband coverage levels across the UK, nations and regions

July was the month when the UK went full retro with both weather that is a repeat of 1976 and even more retro by millions of years was the copper dinosaur CityFibre are using to promote their full fibre roll-out in Milton Keynes. Ironically the retail partner Vodafone continues to refer to FTTC services as fibre in its promotional materal.

The CityFibre roll-out in Milton Keynes has started but at just 3 or 4 postcodes currently we have not added to our coverage systems, once the footprint increases and details of the actual packages are published we will get it all integrated into the coverage figures and package searches.

The Openreach FTTP footprint that we know about has increased by 10,000 premises to 529,000 in the last month. The G.fast footprint is growing quickly rom 373,000 premises to 539,000 premises in the last few weeks and is now larger than the Openreach FTTP footprint. If you look at our broadband maps the Openreach FTTP footprint actually looks like it is larger, but this is an illusion down to the plotting of postcodes on the map, since the dense urban areas where G.fast is usually appearing have a lot more premises per postcode. There is in theory around another 500,000 premises of G.fast to be found and based on the reports of pods appearing that are not live just yet it Openreach is forging on with its roll-out.

Looking at the movers and shakers the five local authorities with the biggest change since the start of July are Kingston Upon Hull (+2.50%), Mid Suffolk District (+1.45%), Fenland District (+1.39%), North Norfolk District (+1.00)  and Tendring District (+0.93%). Of course due to things such as the building of new homes in those areas with no or little broadband roll-out activity some have gone backwards in the last week e.g. Gateshead District (-0.40%), Blaenau Gwent (-0.37%) and Northumberland (-0.23%). The next summary in a months time should see a smaller impact from new build because we have finished with the integration of the latest data, but there will still be small shifts in the premises count as we pick up changes in the premises counts e.g. expansion of estates as more homes get built but within an existing postcode.

The problems around new build premises not  getting superfast broadband by default continue, while the number getting fibre to the premises is improving and 2018 is running at 46.8% currently, there are 19.2% of new build premises in 2018 without a superfast option - we may see this improve by 3 to 4% once we finish our checks on whether Virgin Media is available. Changes in policies to make all new build homes full fibre by default are still filtering down through the building chain but the worry we have is that the public do not realise that this is the case.
