Peak time speeds for UK broadband providers in May 2018
The changes to how broadband speeds feature in advertising came into effect a month ago and the change has been somewhat muted beyond a flurry of activity as all those with broadband listings raced to update the information for the larger providers, for the long time tail of small and medium providers there is still a lot of changes to take place but that needs the providers to start using the new rules. It is also perfectly valid to not advertise the speed at all and only when someone starts the order process to reveal the individual speed estimate.
We have for a few months shared the speeds we see from our speed test and partners in the 8pm to 10pm window and while it is three weeks since the end of May and we are preparing for end of June and Q2 2018 it is time to share what we have been seeing during May.
Some changes of note, the Virgin Media VIVID 350 service is missing because we did not see enough tests in the time window and for some other Virgin Media speeds the additional splitting to create 70 Mbps and 150 Mbps points has had an impact. BT Consumer has re-introduced a 40/10 FTTC product but we will need to wait a few months to see if the volumes are enough to introduce a split so that BT has three FTTC products rather than two, the introduction is for two reasons we believe, make use of the reduced GEA-FTTC 40/10 pricing imposed on Openreach but also some slower customers on the 55/10 product may be moved saving the retailer some money and pushing the average speed up of the 55/10 service.
In line with our other speed reports the up to phrase will be missing but to make it easy for people to compare like for like we will use the providers service name and the underlying wholesale product in brackets e.g. FTTC 80/20.
Previous peak time speed charts have used alphabetical ordering but to group similar services together we are adopting a descending median download speed.
