UK broadband speed test results for April 2018

It is four weeks since our last speed test round-up so it is time to share what we saw for the UK broadband market in April. As usual additional news item will follow during may giving the peak period speeds for the most popular packages and our comparison between single download and multiple download speeds.

For all the talk about full fibre, the explosion one would expect from the number of press releases and speeches is still to make a major impact, we seeing a little more testing but volumes on lots of services are such that they slip in and out of the table due to the geographic sample size limits. The presence of several fixed wireless services has actually pushed some of the ADSL/ADSL2+ packages off the bottom of the table and we would love for there to be extra incentives to be created to get people to adopt the various better services that are available to many (but not all) ADSL/ADSL2+ users.

TalkTalk may have announced its G.fast services and BT Consumer has been selling them for some time, but the level of take-up is still so low no monthly figures can be shared, possibly in July after Q2 we may have seen some growth.

(*) the results go above what is possible for FTTC with these providers because we need to adjust our filtering to handle business customers that may be using an Ethernet service.

For an explanation on the quality metric and the range of scores visit our broadband speed test FAQ.

What the table does not convey is the popularity of each service, so Sky Fibre up to 38 Mbps and ADSL2+ plus the Virgin Media 100 Mbps products were the three most popular services being tested in April but BT ADSL/ADSL2+ which slipped off the bottom of the table was the fifth most popular service and its this continued popularity of ADSL/ADSL2+ services that explain why when we publish council and regional speed test results that speeds are only creeping up.
