UK broadband speed test results for March 2018

A day or two later than usual but the analysis of some 187 broadband packages and/or providers for the period of March 2018 from our speed test is now available with the top sixty packages that had enough data to provide a range of speeds for analysis.

The top of the top has some changes with Community Fibre jumping in at the top, followed by Hyperoptic and Gigaclear, which given the Gigabit nature of the products is where you would expect them.

The end of March also marks the end of Q1 2018 and we are pleased to report that the analysis of broadband speeds for the quarter are now on our coverage and speed stats site with overall speeds for the UK continuing an upward trend and we will look at some of the top and bottom 10 areas later in April.

Some may be upset that their favourite provider is missing, hence the odd email from Utility Warehouse and SSE customers, but as their services are usually indistinguisable from other services on the various wholesale providers e.g. Daisy, TalkTalk Wholesale we do not split them out.

(*) the results go above what is possible for FTTC with these providers because we need to adjust our filtering to handle business customers that may be using an Ethernet service.

For an explanation on the quality metric and the range of scores visit our broadband speed test FAQ.

To give people some idea of the relative size of the different services, the 12 most common products in terms of testing in descending order of popularity were: Sky ADSL2+, Sky Fibre up to 38 Mbps (FTTC), Virgin Media VIVID 100 Mbps, BT Infinity 1 up to 38 Mbps (FTTC), BT ADSL/ADSL2+, TalkTalk ADSL2+, TalkTalk up to 38 Mbps (FTTC), BT Infinity 2 up to 76 Mbps (FTTC), Virgin Media 50 Mbps, Virgin Media VIVID 200 Mbps and  Plusnet ADSL/ADSL2+. The median speed of just 5.1 Mbps on the BT ADSL/ADSL2+ meant that it got pushed off the bottom of the main table this month and we may see more ADSL2+ services slip off the bottom if the full fibre operators continue their expansion/

The fact that ADSL/ADSL2+ services are still appearing in the list of most popular services is why the UK median broadband speeds are not that exciting. The moves of Ofcom to reduce the price of the GEA-FTTC 40/10 service is often criticised but if the price drops make the price of FTTC/VDSL2 services closer to ADSL2+ products then just maybe we may see the popularity list shifting and then one day explore the turning off of legacy ADSL/ADSL2+ hardware in telephone exchanges.

G.fast services are not in the table as there are still too few tests, but looking at the Q1 2018 results we can share that the median download speed is 148.5 Mbps, with the bottom 10% hitting 115.9 Mbps and the top 10% 295.5 Mbps, upload speeds are bottom 10% 14.4 Mbps, median 31.4 Mbps and top 10% 47.3 Mbps and a quality score of 0.2.

FTTC or FTTP? Nope MTTP for me microwave to the premises. All the potential of FTTP but for far less last mile cost. Thankyou Boundless Communications for giving me the speed I need and no Openreach in the way.

Thats a very big table, can we get it in excel so we can do some filtering/sorting/analysis on it??

Nothing to stop you doing a copy/paste into excel (other spreadsheet apps are available)
