UK broadband speed test results for February 2018

It is that time again i.e. our monthly analysis of all the speed tests we saw in the previous month, and we have split some more of the providers into the various speed tiers they sell, so the 60 packages listed are from a much longer list of 183 providers and packages. As always there are some providers who are missing from the published table due to the small geographical sample size.

The speeds shown are from the full 24 hour period of each day, we will cover the largest providers products each month now in an additional 8pm to 10pm peak time slot news item and take a look at the daily variation in speeds too. The old peak versus off-peak which compares our single download test versus our multiple download test summary will continue, as this is a good way of looking at the ability of providers to stream video smoothly.

For an explanation on the quality metric and the range of scores visit our broadband speed test FAQ.

(*) the Entanet up to 76 Mbps service is one of the new product splits this month and some more work is needed to identify the speed tests with the unusually high upload speed and determine what technology to categorise them under, there a degree of caution should be exercised on these figures.

In addition to the extra analysis to split Eclipse, Entanet, Post Office, Daisy and Origin services into their different broadband categories the product splitting for the Virgin Media services has been adjusted to take into account the increased over provisioning the cable service is now running with. An additional change is that Virgin Media Business users in the last day or two of February may have seen the speed test detect them as Virgin Media Business distanct from the general Virgin Media cable pool and in future months if there is enough tests the business cable service may also appear in the results.

The Hyperoptic 30 Mbps service jumps out with the worst quality score and this is thought to be down to two main factors, the way that the underlying connection is throttled down to the 30 Mbps service speed limits and people who have not upgraded their router to a dual band 802.11ac device and thus are seeing lots of Wi-Fi congestion from using the 2.4 GHz band in apartment buildings.

We are still some way from being able to talk about G.fast service speeds in our main table (i.e. sample size is too small) and a big element of this is that we estimate there is perhaps only 3,000 G.fast connections live across the UK, but to give some idea the median download speed is 153.4 Mbps with median upload of 31.6 Mbps.
