Netflix figures from TalkTalk show demand on streaming content
TalkTalk has released some data on the level of Netflix use on their network, a new record breaking amount of traffic was carried during the evening of Sunday 1st March at some 322 Gbps (322,000 Mbps) and with the overall traffic volume hitting around 1.5 Tbps (1500 Gbps).
The figures seem astounding, but when you consider that TalkTalk has some 4,236,000 broadband customers of which 400,000 are using a fibre based solution, the peak time usage is around 0.35 Mbps. Netflix consumes anything between 2.5 Mbps and 10 Mbps usually, which means that 1/5 of all the TalkTalk peak traffic was probably cased by around 60,000 to 80,000 people using the video streaming service.
While TalkTalk is able to control the amount of external traffic through CDN devices placed throughout its network, it will be interesting to see what impact BBC 3 going online only will have, while BBC 3 does not have massive viewing figures, with 690,000 people watching Bangkok Airport if they do this online there will be an impact on traffic patterns.
