Free Mobile SIM for Plus TV customers as TalkTalk goes quad play

TalkTalk may have just launched an additional element to its Plus TV broadband and YouView service that gives them an edge on the vast majority of broadband providers.

All new and existing Plus TV customers are set to receive a free mobile SIM and unlike the free SIM packs you can pick up at supermarket checkouts, this SIM includes a monthly allowance.

  • Monthly Allowance on bundled SIM
  • 100 minutes of calls
  • 250 texts
  • 200MB of data
  • Free calls to family members who use a mobile paid for by the same account

Plus TV comes in two flavours, either ADSL2+ (£18.50) or a FTTC fibre based connection (£28.50). This gets you a full featured YouView PVR, 7 Sky TV channels (including Sky 1), unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines and the TalkTalk parental controls system. Voice line rental is a requirement and is £15.95 per month or £14.35 if you pay a full 12 months in advance.

Running until the 6th November 2014, TalkTalk is offering a £75 Love2Shop voucher to new customers who signup online and who don't need a new number or new phone line, and the first six months of service are half price, so £9.25 on ADSL2+ or £14.25 on fibre.

The free SIM offer applies to existing customers, with a pre-registration system open for those who want to be at the front of the queue to receive the SIM when they start to be sent out in December. For those who have signed up to Plus TV already at the current prices there is no price change, but we have been told that some legacy Plus TV customers may see a price rise in the future.

For those thinking that the bundle of inclusive items looks impossible, it should be remembered that TalkTalk will be gambling on people adding additional mobiles to the account, plus old fashioned landline calls and the YouView service has various add-ons available generating revenue for TalkTalk, e.g. a Sky Sports and Sky Movies bundle is available that takes the package price to £58.50 per month.

"Monthly Allowance on bundled SIM: 200MB of data"

This is a joke, I can use it up in just a few minutes.

200mb pm data is perfectly adequate for a 98 year granny who just checks her emails now and again and visits the occasional website. Horses for courses...

Talk Talk are using VF though aren't they (the same network Sky are rumoured to be trialing *sigh*) many people will struggle using 200Mb a month on their GPRS connection anyway.

I afree, baby_frogmella. It depends what you're doing. I'm one of a dwindling minority who don't have a smartphone. I use a small amount of Pay As You Go minutes & texts so this would mean a pound or two a month reducing to nowt for me. I'll probably use up my existing credit and switch to this as I already have the Plus TV package.
