Try for Melrose as three cabinets bring first superfast broadband to area
Melrose Rugby players posed around a nicely wrapped up fibre cabinet to mark the availability of fibre based broadband in the town. The exchange has until now offered the BT Wholesale ASDL and TalkTalk LLU (ADSL2+) services, so the option for faster speeds will be welcomed and as the cabinets actually went live back in July the first customers are already live.
The three live cabinets are 1, 4 and 5, with plans to switch on cabinets 3 and 6 in the coming weeks. Cabinet 2 is undergoing some delays due to wayleave issues. All of these cabinets are via the Superfast Scotland project. In Melrose not all lines are connected via green street cabinets, near the telephone exchange there is a small number of Exchange Only lines, but it is possible that FTTP may arrive at a later date to convert these beyond quick ADSL/ADSL2+ speeds into the real superfast arena.
While the speed boosts will be welcome, Melrose may be one of those towns that does not reach a 90% with access to a superfast broadband service target, worst case we estimate is the figure may be 70% with access to 30 Mbps or faster speeds. It should be pointed out that the goals of 90% covered by a superfast service in 2015 and 95% in 2017 are not about each individual community, but across the nation as a whole.
