Digital Scotland announce 90,000 premises to benefit from fibre broadband
Around 55,000 homes and businesses now have access to fibre broadband in Scotland under the Digital Scotland initiative, and 90,000 more are set to benefit in 18 local authority areas during the next phase of the programme. This will involve rolling out superfast broadband at speeds of up to 80Mbps to new areas, as well as increasing the footprint of fibre broadband coverage in existing areas.
The £410 million project should see approximately 85% of premises in Scotland with access to fibre broadband by the end of 2015/16, increasing to 95% at the end of 2017/18. This will benefit more than three quarters of a million premises across Scotland in total.
"Today marks another important milestone for the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband partnership. The scale of the challenge of delivering fibre broadband across Scotland is greater than any other part of the UK and indeed, much of Europe.
It's fantastic news that more communities and businesses around the country will soon begin to see the benefits of high quality digital connectivity, making them more economically viable in the long term."Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister
The programme plans to announce new areas on a quarterly basis, with the full list announced yesterday available here.
