New Openreach CEO named

Openreach with its fibre roll-out concentrated around FTTC is in a unique and exciting position within the UK and today sees the news that the ex-head of HSBC in the UK, Joe Garner is set to start as the new CEO for Openreach in mid-February.

"I am thrilled to be joining Openreach at such a critical moment – a moment when technology is redefining how our society communicates. The massive investment that Openreach is making in the UK’s high speed internet infrastructure is something of a revolution that will greatly benefit people and businesses in this country. I am grateful to my predecessor and the engineers who have already delivered so much. It is my ambition to build on this work and I intend to focus on customer service, continued innovation and maintaining fair and equal access for all."

Joe Garner is to be the new CEO of Openreach

Joe replaces Olivia Garfield who announced she was stepping down in November 2013. Joe stepped down from his HSBC roll back in 2013, moving out of the banking sector neatly avoids loyalty conflicts.

The experience of working in a heavily regulated sector will be useful experience, as the dominant position of Openreach outside of Virgin Media areas means that as the part public funded BDUK roll-outs increase in size the pressure to ensure straight forward and low pricing is available on equal terms to all players will increase. The next five years will also see more calls for greater control of VDSL2 ports by operators to allow them to differentiate services, and with the optimism of a newly started New Year we would like to dream of perhaps Openreach looking at improving the appeal of its Fibre (FTTP) on Demand service or starting to talk of a wider roll-out of FTTP and the timescales they envisage for it.

Will be sadly missed Olivia Garfield as she had been fully supportive me in the last months with FTTC.

"HSBC roll" - Hot Sausage, Bacon and Cheese, perhaps? Should be "role" or possibly "rôle" if being pernicketty...

Trust a banker?

I can see he might need to work at generating some credibility amongst the rank & file engineering staff.

Do you think he will allow the public to actually be able to complain about the shocking service Openreach provide?

I hope so.
