Virgin Media adds 30,000 cable customers in last quarter

Virgin Media features as another of the operations owned by Liberty Global in the Q3 2013 financial results for the operator and while some of the International operations are looking at speed tiers of 200 Mbps, the results do highlight the 'market leading' nature of the Virgin Media 120 Mbps service in the UK.

Virgin Media has grown to some 4,488,000 broadband customers in total, they actually added 30,000 cable broadband customers in the last quarter, but migrations away from the legacy Virgin Media National ADSL service (lost 16,600 customers) reduced the overall growth level.

The Virgin Media cable network passes some 12,531,500 homes, which means they have the choice of two distinct local loop networks (other option being Openreach), and Virgin Media has some form of billing relationship with 4,892,800 of these households.

The upgrade programme to double peoples connection speeds is still on going and there are now 69% of the cable broadband customers on a 30 Mbps or faster service and amongst new customers signing up 45% are picking a 60 Mbps or faster product.

So while there has been lots of press coverage over comments that the UK has no superfast cities, the reality is much more that many millions can get faster connections if willing to pay for them or simply switch provider, of course there are those not in the Virgin Media footprint or outside the Openreach FTTC/P roll-out area, but one does wonder if all the press coverage on poor speeds is actually making people think the situation is worse than it really is, thus they don't go looking for upgrades. Alternatively there is the much simpler view that people want faster speeds but do not want to spend any more money and are happy to trade time for saving £5 to £10 per month.
