Make a difference, join the BDUK and shape broadband improvements
It looks like the BDUK is on a serious recruitment drive and just maybe is not going to rely so much on expensive contractors, the new roles are unlikely to make any significant difference to the current projects which are like a slow steamroller where we simply waiting for them to deliver now. Though some of the roles will be working with these existing 44 projects to monitor/audit delivery.
The various jobs on offer are:
- Broadband Deputy Commercial Director, up to £120,000
- Broadband Commercial Support, c£50,000
- Broadband Procurement Lead, up to £120,000
- Implementation Technical Support Lead, c£80,000
- Implementation Technical Support Adviser, c£50,000 - £60,000
- Broadband Value for Money Adviser, c£50,000 - £60,000
The biggest difference these new roles are likely to have is shaping the work to extend beyond the notional 90% by 2015 to reach 95% superfast coverage across the UK in 2017 and pushing this as far as 99% in 2018. This area is the one where lots of arguing is going on, delivering more competition is something the Government is keen to see being achieved, but how this is achieved in an EU State Aid environment is unclear, any project funded effectively becomes a mini-monopoly in an area, so while it is possible to improve on the monopoly where BT has won all the current BDUK contracts. The Super Connected cities has found one solution, no big single contract, but lots of vouchers to get around the aid rules.
