Shortlist for Internet Hero and Villain ISPA Awards published

While the various companies and organisations in the various other categories for the 2013 ISPA Awards are just waiting to find out whether they have won or not after previously been shortlisted, there are two categories we have been waiting to find out who is on the shortlist.

Shortlist for Internet Hero

  • Deputy Prime Minister Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP for openly stating there wouldn’t be a Communications Data Bill under his watch
  • Liberal Democrat MP Julian Huppert, one of the few MPs that fully understands the internet
  • Edward Snowden, who blew the whistle on the US government’s PRISM surveillance programme
  • Spamhaus, nominated for fighting off a significant global DDoS attack in the spring

Shortlist for Internet Villain

  • Home Secretary Rt Hon Theresa May MP, for pushing on with the Communications Data Bill
  • American PRISM programme, for the sheer size and scale of the alleged surveillance of internet users
  • Bluecoat, for selling Deep Packet Inspection and other surveillance equipment to unfavourable regimes
  • Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Erdogan for calling social media a ‘menace to society’ during recent social unrest
Shortlist for two award categories

The decision for who will win these two awards lies with the ISPA Council, whereas the other awards that will be handed out at the star studded awards ceremony on 11th July were shortlisted via technical testing for the technical categories, with the final decision made by a panel of judges.

Why is the guy that authorized the latest Virgin media traffic management policy not on the shortlist for internet villain? He'd get my vote all day long.

Did you nominate them back in May

Nominations were open, and this is the short list, so it is possible they were nominated but got beaten onto the shortlist.

Nick Clegg? - surely an MP 'openly stating' anything isn't really worth anything?

Worth a few laughs from time to time, and worth remembering when you next have to vote...

"with the final decision made [[[my]]] a panel of judges."

The panel of judges last year appeared to make their decisions based on trying to not upset certain isp's, rather than on actual merit of the particular area they were judging.

Hopefully this year we will not see more of the same, as it takes away any validity from the ispa and the awards.
