Cambridgeshire picks BT to deliver USC and superfast services
BT has been picked by Cambridgeshire County Council to be the commercial partner in its project to deliver superfast broadband to 90% of premises in the county and 2 Mbps to very nearly 100% of the remainder by 2015.
The size of the investment by BT will not be revealed until the contract is signed which will be in March 2013, after the various approvals have been gained from the central BDUK body.
Hopefully more details on targets for coverage will appear at the contract signing. The use of the words very nearly 100% with respect to premises getting a 2 Mbps service is an interesting choice of words and might be a sign that the Universal Service Commitment is falling apart or may not be implemented equally across the UK.
For those living and working in Cambridgeshire the council has published some FAQ entries that includes maps highlighting where superfast broadband would be available without any intervention from the project and the areas of the county where standard broadband is not available or slower than 2 Mbps.
