Artist promotion website blocked by the major providers

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Those following the story of The Pirate Bay have yet another tale to tell their grandchildren in years to come, as it appears the site Promobay.org is being blocked by Virgin Media, Be and BT as it was included on the list of sites the courts ordered the providers to block earlier in the year.

Promobay for those not aware of it, exists to help promote new and interesting music acts, though the mission statement of the site is to 'break the music industry'. Perhaps that is why it ended up on the block list some months ago, for now it is just a plain webpage with links to five youtube videos, and a way for artists to add themselves plus an optional torrent/magnet link.

So while this episode shows the problems of web blocking, one cannot help but wonder if the website in question was actually setup with the primary purpose of demonstrating how blocking can impact on other more legitimate sites.

Update 4th December, it appears that blocking varies according to whether it is www.promobay.org or promobay.org that you use as the URL.

BE blocks the promobay.org, yet lets www.promobay.org through, hooray for really clearly defined blocking policies.

The address, only the address and no other address - what do you mean you can still get to the site?!?!

Hooray for the warped process that is site blocking in the UK - NOT!
