Speed boosts for some in Digital Region area

Fluidata has indicated that Digital Region who run a FTTC network in South Yorkshire are to carry out upgrades to their hardware in some areas, with the benefit that those with high speeds currently will see even faster speeds available.

While ISPreview has not found any specifics, looking at the possible options and that Digital Region was ahead of the curve compared to Openreach on deploying VDSL2 profile 17a speeds, we are willing to bet the upgrade will be the deployment of line cards capable of running VDSL2 profile 30a.

Profile 30a actually offers the biggest speed boost on the upstream speeds, with lines under around 500m benefiting from significantly faster upstream speeds. Only lines shorter than around 200m will see improvements to the downstream speeds, these short lines could see connections at a symmetric speed of 130 Mbps. VDSL2 manages the spectrum it uses differently to how ADSL and ADSL2+ used to, with the older services the upstream was confined to the lower end of the spectrum, with VDSL2 there are alternating blocks of downstream and upstream bands, so the extra 13 MHz of spectrum that profile 30a uses is able to be used to boost upstream. A note for the ultra observant, the UK used profile 8c, which was same banding as profile 8b, but has a lower power level hence why when VDSL2 was in its early stages of deployment 40 Mbps was a common speed point.

The speed profiles are taken from a white paper by Aware Inc. and available on the ICT Regulation Toolkit site, that is a joint production between infoDev and the International Telecommunication Union. As with all speed profile graphs the reality in the real world can be different, sometimes better, sometimes worse so it will be interesting to see exactly what happens to VDSL2 speeds in South Yorkshire.


Bah. I hate 'kft'. It's the metric system that uses prefixes. Imperial users should stick to yards, miles, griblets or whatever. It's their problem if they have to use a calculator to 'convert' between them :)

Again it's about chasing headline speeds. In this case Upto 100Mbps. Looking at the graphs anyone with a line length of 600m or greater should see a nice speed decrease. Progress?

30a was brought into the ANFP at the same time as 17a so could indeed be that.

That plus vectoring would potentially give a boost to many people regardless of distance from the cabinet.

I don't think this is anything to do with rolling out 30a, although they might be capable.

I think this is to fix a hardware problem that has resulted in them having to lock Max customers to 70Mbit when they SHOULD be connecting at up to 130MBit.

I am one of those customers and if so will be very happy to FINALLY be getting what I am paying for, the max my line can handle.

The upgrade has nothing to do with 30a. The linecards in the cabinets already support 30a (however it isn't being used right now). Their is a limitation of 70Mb on all DR connections even if you can sync at a higher rate. This is what the upgrade is about, removing that limitation at the exchange level so people can experience 100Mb and higher speeds.

The limitiation here is because the line cards deployed in the AL DSLAMs are NVLT-C based cards and although they support 17a ( I dont recall they do 30a ) there is a physical limitation on the sync speed of 70 Mb due to the chipset. You will not sync higher than this.

The upgrade will be to replace these with NVLT-G based line cards in the streeet cabs, its nothing to do with the exchange kit. These support >100 Mb and also 30a along with line bonding also.
