Virgin Media launched TV Anywhere service
The ties to the cable and satellite set-top box are continuing to whither away. Virgin Media has launched its TV Anywhere service which should allow its cable TV customers to watch content in a web browser or smartphone/tablet anywhere they can get Internet connectivity.
"The world of digital entertainment is moving so fast, consumers are always looking for the next ‘big thing’ to take advantage of the features and connectivity built into today’s gadgets. Virgin TV Anywhere builds upon our fantastic TV service, blending in the best of TiVo and our expertise in broadband and mobile, to bring customers a compelling entertainment experience to enjoy whenever they want, wherever they are – all at no extra cost."Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media
Currently apart from browser playback only iOS devices are supported, an android app is expected in 2013. Some 45 channels are available to watch, and if your guilty pleasure is catching up on Phineas and Ferb you can even do so while waiting on an Underground platform.
There was a time when you had to stand up to change TV channel, now with the iOS app you can be tweeting on your iPad and controlling the TiVo. The rise of second screen interaction is seen as important in the media world, but we also are finding that the best TV shows that grab our attention and draw you in result in the phone/tablet being put down. Having time to tweet and comment online is perhaps a sign that a shows script is lacking. Just think about it, when was the last TV show where you stopped side-browsing while watching it?
