Virgin Media grows its cable broadband customer base
Virgin Media has published its Q3 2012 financial statement and headline with the addition of 40,000 cable customers in the last quarter. Their cable broadband service performed even better adding 56,900 customers in the quarter taking the total to 4,209,500 customers.
The rise in broadband customers is a mixture of new customers to the Virgin Media cable network, and more customers adding broadband to their existing cable TV service. This extra bundling is reflected in the increased ARPU which now stands at £48.73 (a rise of 1.8% in the last quarter).
With the slowest cable broadband service now sold by Virgin Media being its 30 Mbps product, it is of no real surprise to hear it now has 1.8m customers on the 30 Mbps or faster products. This is an increase of 452,900 during the quarter, 44% of new customers elect to subscribe to a 60 Mbps or faster product. Overall 837,500 subscribe to a 50 Mbps or faster product. The ongoing speed doubling programme is continuing, and with only 40% of the network upgraded as yet, the proportion of customers on the under 30 Mbps products is set to decrease further.
While the focus is rightly on the core cable broadband business, Virgin Media does provide a national broadband service utilising ADSL and ADSL2+ to areas where its cable network does not reach. The number of subscribers to this service is now 203,900, a reduction of 57,400 subscribers.
