Isle of Dogs has joined the 21st Century with Gigabit service
The Isle of Dogs and the blocks of flats that cover it have traditionally been a nightmare with regards to broadband, but that is all changing now. Hyperoptic has gone live in its initial residential tower block in the area which is Lanterns Court, with apparently 100 homes in the 600 potential already hooked up, before any marketing drive.
Isle of Dogs for telephone line based broadband is served by the Poplar exchange, which means that as well as some areas suffering from excessive telephone line lengths, there has often been periods of time when the exchange was closed to new broadband orders from one provider or another. The Hyperoptic fibre to the building (FTTB) solution avoids all these exchange based problems.
"The demand has come from those living in the developments. Residents here come from all over the world where they are used to these types of connections.
The feedback we were getting previously were the speeds were terrible and there was no point in having internet. This changes all that."Hyperoptic's director of sales and marketing Brian Doherty
The news that one serviced apartment group, City Nites is offering the new service for free in its 29 units, is an indication of the reasonable prices Hyperoptic charge, and also the fact that property management companies are understanding that broadband speed and availability can help sway people when looking for a new property to rent either long or short term.

FTTB and FTTP can both deliver 1 gigabit so I wouldn't get overexcited about the difference. Prefer an ethernet socket and less kit, personally.
Who is also providing a gigabit service to residents in that area then?
FTTB is gigabit capable, and is used in many cities across Europe to provide 1000 Mbps services. Ethernet can also do 10Gig
@Andrew
IIRC Openreach has been providing FTTP to whole blocks of individual apartments (each apartment gets its own direct fibre) on the Isle of Dogs for some time. FTTB is fine but does introduce additional contention, just like cable.
Name me some blocks with the full fibre to flat from Openreach?
They only launched FTTP on 2nd July, and the talk is still of MDU trials
If BT had even a 1000 flats on FTTP I would presume we would have seen a press release. We have covered MDU trial news when its announced, the difference is that Hyperoptic is a live product
@Andrew
Don't have names of the buildings to hand, will check. In meantime perhaps some other locals will confirm, confident Hyperoptic is well behind on this.
Plenty of FTTC on Isle of Dogs now and speedtests show people using it, none of them look like FTTP speeds.
And anyway Openreach has not even started to trial a Gig service.
I know of only three developments trialling the bt solution. Port East, Canary Riverside and WIQ. I've not heard anything about whether these have gone live yet. I know Canary Riverside was nearing completion a few weeks ago.
Thanks Locutus. So that's at least three developments vs one, I'm sure I'd heard of others too. It's not an anti-Hyperoptic point, more trying to get a sense of proportion in the headline for a me-too development.
If BT is not trialling but actively deploying to MDU's then that is news in itself.
Will ask Openreach
No offence but Hyperoptic are a bit late to the party here, a number of the nearby blocks already have FTTP. So not sure what justifies the headline given its only FTTB?
