Traffic management update at Plusnet creates retro experience

It seems something went wrong at Plusnet last night, and customers were posting about ISDN like speeds on our forums from 8:30am today. An update at 8:37am on the Plusnet status RSS feed indicated that Plusnet was aware of a problem arising from previously announced maintenance to their Traffic Management Platform.

Slow speeds/Data transfer (70143) - UPDATE
‎02 ‎February ‎2012, ‏‎12:06:56
This is an update to our previous announcement regarding slow speeds and data transfer issues. Our engineers have applied a temporary solution and many customers are reporting that they are seeing speeds improve.

We are continuing to investigate the root cause and will update this service status once we have more information.

Apologies for the inconvenience this has or may be causing you.

Kind regards
Customer Support

Traffic management maintenance update
‎02 ‎February ‎2012, ‏‎08:37:56
We are currently investigating a problem that has arisen during maintenance of our traffic management platform. Customers will likely experience slower speeds than normal due to being assigned a default profile.

Our network engineers are investigating this issue and we will provide a further update once we have more information.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused by the temporary low speeds.

Kind Regards,
Customer Support

Extracts from Plusnet status pages

It would appear connections were being assigned a default profile that resulted in very slow speeds, and for some web pages were failing to load. As of midday a temporary solution had been put in place, that should have seen speeds improve, but the underlying issue is still being investigated.

yeah it was great fun this morning.Plusnet value broa..... er Dialup. Take a long time to use up my 20Gb at that speed. Once I had managed to get to thier status page all became clear. Great way to make sure EVERYONE get the same speed though! :-)
All working again now.

It was just like being back on Pipex a decade or so ago, when unlimited meant unlimited and 2Mbit was at least £40/month. Back in the days when when BTw Capacity Based Charging was just a pipe dream, and when BTw didn't have fragmentation/MTU issues in their network. Oh no. Definitely not a problem in the BTw network at all. The nice senior technical chap from Pipex, whose name I forget but who liked rollercoasters (?), where is he now?

Almost got sufficiently motivated to get my PAYG 3G dongle out and then remembered (a) my phone(s) can do it these days (b) I had to go to work.

Not a good experience to go through. But my business emails kept coming and going and my customers still bought.

So finding that web pages took ages and maybe a few goes to load was acceptable in a crisis. And PlusNet, as usual, kept us all up to date on what was happening and kept their timescale for the resolution.

I wish that other providers were so helpful when something goes wrong.
