Herefordshire Council looking at committing £6m on broadband
Herefordshire Council's cabinet is cutting the discussions over allocating some £6 million from its own budget close to the mark, with a full council meeting to discuss the issue on 3rd February when the plan has to be submitted to the BDUK before the end of February 2012.
Herefordshire and Gloucestershire County Councils were amongst the first wave of pilots for BDUK funding and back in January 2011 but as yet we are still not aware of any actual awarding of contracts or trials under that scheme. The pilots seem to simply be areas that are slightly further ahead on the procurement process.
Herefordshire was allocated £6,350,000 by the BDUK in August 2011, but this will only be released on approval of the plan. The number of properties with poor or no broadband was estimated at 84,128, which is a massive 99.8% of the areas of the county eligible for State support. Gloucestershire has an allocation of £8,070,000 to cover 150,405 properties, which is 54.3% of the county.
