Digital video services now 15% of video market

A lot of coverage is given to areas as such as the blocking of Newzbin, but there are positives out there. The British Video Association (BVA) reports that the level of digital transactions for video was worth some £206.3 million to the end of Q3, making up some 15% of the overall video market. This is a 20% year on year growth in the consumption of paid for digital content.

The market is still ruled by the physical formats, with some 127 million purchases this year, though it is not an area that is immune from people tightening their belts, with an overall decline of 6% compared to 2010.

The BVA has highlighted the trend for triple-play releases, where the Blu-Ray, DVD and a digital copy are included in the same package. Though this digital copy is generally DRM laden, and the code to unlock the disc bound copy often has an expiry date, so if you have any on your shelf, make sure you redeem it before it runs out.

I'm curious:What does triple play do for people? Obviously I'm missing something here but I only want one 'media'. The one that fits in my player.

Is the idea as simple as giving people three legal copies of the same thing?

probably to help the transition between DVD and BluRay and to legalise transcontainerisation of the media for use on a optical diskless portable device.

As I understand it, you do get three copies for your own use but with limitations. As for the reason, I suspect it is a commercial move to try to get users to use Blu-Ray instead of DVD, but realising that many do not have a BR player! They also realise that many do not have a broadband service fast enough for decent downloading/playing of video content, especially rural users. Personally, I'm happy with DVD and my broadband is too slow for decent performance.
