BE Wholesale officially launched
Service provider BE has officially launched its BE Wholesale service targetting ISPs looking to build retail services which require more control than currently available on other competing platforms. Over the last 18 months, a number of service providers have been working with BE partner Fluidata to prove the benefits of this service which operates on the BE/O2 Local Loop Unbundled (LLU) platform.
One of the early ISP customers using BE services, AAISP, spoke at the launch event to explain the difference it makes to them:
"One of the key benefits we have seen with BE is direct control over the modem settings in the exchange. We can adjust the [target noise] margin, interleaving and other settings; they take effect immediately. We allow customers to make these changes on our control pages, so they can choose stability over speed if that's what they want; which a lot of businesses do. What's even better is BE don't tinker with these settings automatically - all of this means a lot fewer faults."Adrian Kennard, Managing Director, AAISP
The coverage of the BE/O2 network reaches over 70% of businesses on the UK mainland and it claims to operate a low congestion ADSL2+ network which Ofcom has rated as the fastest wholesale DSL service. In particular, users have access to upload speeds of up to 2.5Mbps, significantly more than with many other services. Already more than 30 service providers are using the network to deliver high quality broadband services.
Head of BE Wholesale Dan Cunliffe explained that not having to support legacy equipment meant that the company could better focus its ADSL2+ platform on delivering services more suited to today's business requirements ranging from video conferencing in the enterprise to VPN and VoIP in SME organisations. The move to cloud-based applications makes high quality connectivity vital.
Research carried out by BE indicates two thirds of UK businesses are concerned poor internet speeds are impeding the growth of the UK economy whilst one in three said they didn't feel their current Internet connection would support video conferencing, VoIP and cloud based services.
"The launch of BE Wholesale represents an important milestone for O2, allowing us to extend our portfolio into wholesale business broadband, positioning us as the only operator to own and operate a wholesale broadband and mobile service. This is key to our strategy of providing customers with a great experience. Whether it is consumer, business or wholesale we will be delivering the very best services to meet the needs of a burgeoning broadband market."Felix Geyr, Head of Home Broadband, O2
The move by BE/O2 firmly into the wholesale space with a strong brand behind them will present ISPs and users with more choice over networks such as BT Wholesale.
