Vaioni launch uncontended Business DSL

Vaioni have released a new service, Business + Max, which offers businesses fast broadband with a 1:1 contention ratio, to ensure quality of service needed for mission critical applications such as VoIP or video conferencing.

The service is available at different speeds including 512Kbps/512Kbps down and upstream, or 1, 2 or 8Mbps downstream with an 832Kbps upstream. Unlike the Vaioni 20Mbps business DSL product, this is available across BT exchanges as it uses BT Datastream to provide the service. Whilst these products do seem largely similar to existing ones from other providers in terms of speed, they are delivered with a 1:1 contention ratio meaning that the bandwidth will be dedicated for you from the exchange to the ISP and assuming your phone line can sync at the purchased speed, there should be no slow downs involved due to contention because of other users in the area.

The service is available with a fully managed router carrying an SLA of 2hrs response, and 2hrs to fix, standard on all managed Internet services from Vaioni. The cost of the packages are obviously more expensive than the standard contended DSL services available, and start at £129.19 + VAT per month for the 512Kbps, going up to £333.44 + VAT per month for the 8Mbps product.

If you are not specifically after 1:1 contention, Vaioni do have other interesting products including bonded solutions which can bond multiple 20Mbps DSL lines to create a fast resilient Internet connection.

When Bulldog were doing residential DSL using Datastream, you had to be on a Bulldog-enabled exchange (to cover the "backhaul" (?)) costs. Presumably this product design (1:1 contention) and price is such that each customer covers their own costs in full even at maximum usage, so there should be no problem with an exchange with just one 1:1 customer??

How does Datastream fit into the grand 21CN design?

"Broadband services that have been identified as 21CN non-compliant and
therefore needing to be housed on a retained legacy network (i.e. an existing
arrangement rather than 21CN) are:
• All BT Datastream
• Old ADSL lines (CAP line code)
• All BT IPstream & Datastream SDSL lines"
