Vodafone adjust mobile broadband offerings

Vodafone have announced changes to its mobile broadband services commencing on the 4th of February. A new consumer price plan will be available for £15/month (inc. VAT) offering 3GB of data and speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. This is a cut in price by half over existing contracts which are currently available for £30 for 3GB.

Business products will see usage allowances increase to 5GB / month from the existing 3GB, with some added discounts if you opt for a longer term contract.

The existing "Mobile Broadband 30 Day" option will reduce in price to £20 from the current £30, for 3GB of data allowance. This product has a contract with 30 days notice so you can cancel at any time- ideal for occasions when you may be working away from home for a period of time (as long as you stay in the UK). Three also offer a similar service, mobile broadband on a pay as you go (PAYG) basis from as little as £10 per month for 1GB of data.

It is encouraging to see mobile operators starting to compete more within the mobile broadband market. Earlier this month, three announced a free laptop offer available when purchasing a mobile broadband contract and T-Mobile introduced free Wi-Fi at T-Mobile hotspots for web'n'walk customers. We hope that O2 and Orange will liven up a bit and introduce some new offerings to keep consumers and competitors on their toes.

Amazing that UK Voda still don't offer mobile broadband on PAYG. In South Africa, their subsidiary Vodacom offers 3.6Mbps for the equivalent of 15p/Mb on PAYG, though you have to pay full price for the modem (Huawei E220).

Fast and consistent performance, together with attractive pricing, has led to very wide uptake, indeed several people I know there have dumped their landlines.
