EastEnders tops BBC TV by broadband trial

Sky has its SkyByBroadband service, and the BBC is trialling the same technology in the form of the BBC iMP Content Trial. The trial has 5000 participants and ran between November 2005 and February 2006. The top five shows during the trial in terms of downloads was:

  • EastEnders
  • Little Britain
  • Two Pints Of Lager and a Packet of Crisps
  • Bleak House
  • Top Gear

Most of the downloads/viewing are recorded as happening between 10pm and 11pm, which is later than the traditional TV peak viewing hours. The average viewing during the trial was around one hours of programmes per week, which translates to around 2GB of data transfer a month.

Whether download and peer to peer services like the BBC and Sky services will revolutionise broadcasting is not certain, while they simply offer the same content but effectively time shifted this seems unlikely. Once content that is different from what is available elsewhere appears, then it may start to affect how traditional media companies work. The full BBC News Online item can be read here.
