BT plays down the idea that it is after Pipex
Rumours of buy-outs seem to be very common these days, over on The Register, Tim Richardson has noted that BT is playing down talk that it is possibly going to go after Pipex in what could be a £350 million take-over.
The move is apparently linked to WiMAX wireless services, and a desire to use this technology to support a mobile service by BT. It seems that BT may simply sit it out and wait for the licence to come back up for auction, rather than having to acquire the company with the licences currently.
GX Networks acquired Pipex back in 2003, and has gone on to acquire the ISP Freedom2Surf in October 2005. One acquisition before Pipex and the subsequent rebranding was FirstNet who had run the original Tele2 wireless network.
