£27 million for fast broadband in Southern Scotland
The large battles to get a basic level of broadband coverage are almost over, there are still some areas that require work, but it appears bodies like the Scottish Executive are starting to focus on the next target which is faster broadband. The Register has some details on a tendering process that has just started, to spend £27 million bringing 8Mbps or faster broadband to schools, libraries and council offices in the southern area of Scotland.
It is expected that the contract will be awarded in the middle of 2006, with the service up and running some two years later. Whether there will be a direct side effect of faster broadband for home users in the areas is not clear.
