Scottish Executive to get broadband to every community

Scotland has some good news in terms of broadband roll-outs today, 378 out of the 399 exchanges that BT did not ADSL enable as part of its commercial roll-out are set to get a basic broadband service. This is the result of an agreement between the Scottish Executive and BT. Combine this with the 21 exchanges in the Western Isles that are to be enabled via the Connected Communities project, and coverage should extend to 100% of Scottish communities by the end of 2005. More details are on the BBC News website here.

This news should bring basic broadband to 51,000 households and 5,400 businesses. The news item on the BBC site does not explicitly mention ADSL, we are attempting to find out more, since it is possible a wireless service may be deployed in some areas. Also no specific roll-out dates are available at this time, we will update people once we have firm dates.
