Read and weep - 1Gbps for £120 per month in Hong Kong
While the UK and in fact many countries are playing around with connections in the 1Mbps to 8Mbps area, Hong Kong Broadband has pushed a symmetric 1Gbps (1000Mbps) service out to consumers. The service will cost US$215 (roughly £120) per month. More details can be found over on Converge! Network Digest.
The service is set to be available 800,000 households out of the 2.2 million in Hong Kong, and is based around the same Metro Ethernet infrastructure used to deliver existing 100Mbps ($34) and 10Mbps ($16) services. The roll-out means over 10,000 Cisco LAN switches and 800 Cisco routers are being installed in buildings, with Ethernet cabling between the LAN switch cabinet in the building and the apartments.
