BT Retail speed upgrades now official
Todays press release by BT Retail with its 1.4 million retail ADSL customers, represents the biggest sea change in the average ADSL access speed in the country to date probably. The BT Broadband Basic product is to see its speed doubled from 0.5Mbps to 1Mbps. All the other products will run at 2Mbps as standard, though if your line will not support those speeds you will be connected at 1Mbps or 0.5Mbps. BT Business ADSL connections will also be seeing similar treatment.

On the retail products with usage allowances, for new customers the allowance will take effect one month after installation, and existing customers who are migrated onto the products will have one months grace also. The migration of the existing userbase should start from the dates listed in the table above.
In terms of where the new products sit in the market, they are roughly what should be expected from the provider that if it was too cheap there would be lots of complaints filed with the regulator. If you are looking for an ADSL service currently, there are cheaper ISPs out there, or ones with higher allowances for the same price, so shop around.
