Top 10 Fastest Broadband ISPs for January 2004

Eclipse is yet again the top runner in our monthly speed test results with a slightly slower average of 450.5 Kbps compared to last month's 450.9 Kbps. The average across the top-10 has however increased by 1.1 Kbps to 438.8 Kbps reducing the difference between the top provider and the one in tenth position from 28.4 Kbps to 23.7 Kbps downstream and from 7.8 Kbps to 3.0 Kbps upstream significantly narrowing the gap.

BT Openworld and BT Broadband are probably the most noticeable risers in the tests from tenth and eleventh position to ninth and seventh respectively showing a great performance boost on the route to ADSLguide. Freedom 2 Surf has fallen significantly from fourth position at 440.3 Kbps to eighth at 433.4 Kbps reversing its previous rise.

Every time we publish these results, we keep stressing to readers that this table only shows providers who have attained the minimum number of confirmed tests which does exclude many smaller providers. Also, you should remember that it tests 512 Kbps services and therefore will not list 600 Kbps, 1Mbps or faster services that may be available. As always, we would recommend that you use all the information available to you when choosing an ISP and not rely on speed tests alone, particularly one set of data as shown above.
