Netherlands DSL pricing in free-fall

The Register has coverage of the ongoing price war in the DSL marketplace in the Netherlands. Prices of €14.95 for the basic DSL service are not uncommon now - around £10.

Unfortunately it is not the green grass that it looks, some of the offers are very short term and others have usage caps in place. Also the explosion in demand is resulting in users waiting up-to three months for their line to be activated.

It would appear that if the price is low enough then demand can grow very rapidly, the problem is balancing a low price against a sustainable business model. There is little point in supplying ADSL for £10 a month, if the supplier goes under in a few months time, or the quality of service is so poor customers are leaving at the rate they are joining.
