THUS and BT bring broadband to three Scottish Islands

BT Scotland and THUS have announced details of a combined scheme to bring broadband to around a third of the population of the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland. The island capitals of Stornoway, Kirkwall and Lerwick will become the first communities to benefit from the scheme that sees BT Scotland leasing wireless capacity from THUS to link the islands to the BT broadband network on the mainland.

The scheme has been backed by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise and should bring broadband to around 4,700 businesses and consumers in Stornoway, 4,300 in Kirkwall and finally 4,200 in Lewick. The current plans are that the work involved will be completed in the spring.

This scheme will result in the local BT exchanges being ADSL enabled, and rather than the traditional fibre optic backhaul, the wireless link across the Minch and Pentland Firth will then link into the standard backhaul circuits on the mainland. The full press release can be read here.
