Virgin Media digital TV and broadband outages

The Virgin Media cable service status pages lists a number of areas of the UK that are experiencing service outages at present. The number of problem seems larger than normal with the following postcodes affected: MK43, WA12, G73, G72, TF5, N14, B98, CB3, DA12, HP2, TW9, UB4, CR0, SM6, NE3 and SS8.
The problem concerns a loss of a combination of analogue TV, digital TV and cable broadband services. The fault tickets give little detail but may update as more information becomes available.
After the loss of Sky One and other channels following the Virgin vs BSkyB row, customers will be on edge in comparing Sky and Virgin services to meet their needs and with the proposed tube strike on its way in London, even more people will be checking work e-mail from home causing more grief for daytime loss of service than usual.
Update 8:45pm 3rd September 2007: Virgin Media has contacted us to assure us that the problem is not a generic network problem, but rather a fairly normal pattern of hardware breaking in the 400,000 street cabinets and other locations crucial to their network. This is supported by a number of the outages getting marked as resolved at this time.

And if you're a broadband customer, the only way to contact them is to call a premium rate number at 25p/min. That fact alone is going to make me leave Virgin.

Good point jrawle i forgot about that lets annoy the customer and milk them for more cash idea they put in place... Heres a question, can anyone actually name 1 single Improvement (Gloosy ads dont count lol) Virgin have made to the cable service, compared to when it was badged Telewest/NTL??

Don't let the name change fool you, its the same company, same management as NTL:tw who then bought virgin mobile - and took the "virgin" name, to try and relaunch.
I read somewhere on the net that Richard B was thinking of asking for his brand name back after less than 6 months... due to brand issues. Oh dear :-)

I cant believe that, the annoying TV and press ads for virgin cable are 100 times more than when it was Telewest and NTL, something at the top of the corporate chain has changed.
I wouldnt listen to a word branson has to say, many of his "products and services" promise alot but are often just hype.

Yes but given alot of the changes that have come about in such a short amount of time, its obvious its more than just a different name on the product and the higher powers are not the people they once were. I think we can all agree since the rebrand/takeover or whatever it is the service has gone to pot.

AHAHAHAHAHA!
I switched to VM for their 20mb XL package in Brum; it's running slower than when the connection was on 10Mb - and now we have STM speed capping in place between 4pm and midnight (with the potential to be capped until 4am if you go over your allowance at one minute to midnight)... It's just painful.

I give it six months before VM implodes, hopefully Telewest and NTL will be spun off back into their own respective networks when it comes to maintenance and day-to-day operations, because it worked better than the great homogenous mess it's in at the moment.

@ChristopherWoods: are you sure about the 60p/min from BT? I checked and 0906 212 numbers are listed as 25p/min. If you've been charged more, have a word with BT. As bad as Virgin are, I don't think they are quoting the wrong price for this.

I think it will be less than that and it will be dead by xmas or shortly after, personally i hope someone/organisation with a clue takes over and seriously shakes things up.

Cable customers no longer have a BT line. BT will not even give an estimate on re-connection. Customers no aerial as TV comes by cable.
Thats why idiots like us stay with Virgin - we have no option and they can do what they like.
Customer service is non-existant, with faults being dealt with on premium rate in INDIA. Real UK faults are no longer even allowed to give out a contact phone number on proven long term faults where contact would help them solve the problem.

1. Virgin is just a brand name and as above NTL are the main management behind the company now. As of December 2006 the company changed to what it is now.
2. For those of you that were formally Telewest customers you would have noticed a change in the technicians. NTL have for quite a while used contractors to install and service their network, where as Telewest prided itself on it's in house techs. "That is the main reason for your absolute wonderful service" Sarcasm inclosed with that remark BTW

For those of you who have not had the wonder of dealing with the INDIA call centre all I can suggest is DON'T BOTHER!! Wait the fault out. It will cost you a shed load less and you have a better chance of getting more sense out of a brick wall with a few bricks missing.

4. I used to be a tech for Telewest and tried the contractors out as ofc i needed a job. After a short period I quit and I prefer being unemployed than working for a bunch of muppets like them. I am not suprised the Network as gone to hell.

Virgin Media have seen the error of their ways and it appears that they are now looking for Service Technicians to handle the day to day repairs where the contractors will be left to take care of instals. I also am aware that the service techs management is to be the original from old days where this is possible. Hopefully this will improve on the retard actions of the past year.

NTL or VIRGIN MEDIA...Your stuck with them-that's it,at least when you've a BT line you can change your isp..I used to have the digi tv service + telephone(when it was NTL) till they slammed a £5 rise on them...only got tv service about 6 weeks before that,robbin' gits,GOD HELP ANYBODY WHO'S WITH VIRGIN MEDIA-Things always seem to get worse when companys get taken over etc , etc.......

My god Virgin really have screwed a once decent service. After the lost of some TV channels like Sky One and more recently their capping system on broadband and now this situation it beggers believe why anyone would stay with or even sign up with them. The phrase Cowboy outfit doesnt do them justice. If i was lumbered with these bozos id be getting out quick, and if after all their cockups they refused to let me out of the contract id refuse to pay them for the time the service isnt working and parts of the service they promised on sign up are not delivered. What a shower of the you know what!
