550 new homes in Cumbria to benefit from FTTH
Thursday 19 November 2015 18:05:18 by Andrew Ferguson

While there are many new build properties where developers seem to forget about ensuring that decent or even any broadband is available, not all developers suffer from this problem and Story Homes who are developing an estate of 550 homes in Whitehaven, West Cumbria has elected to use GTC to roll-out FTTH as the estate is built.

The first 30 homes are due to be ready in January 2016 and as well as broadband over the fibre link, TV services via a deal with Sky will be offered which is free for the first 12 months (Original bundle channels). In other areas where GTC has been used SeeTheLight and DirectSaveTelecom broadband services are available so we presume the same will apply in this Whitehaven development.

550 homes may represent just 0.2% of the households in Cumbria, but importantly it is another example showing that FTTH is not just the sole domain of Openreach.

Good to see, this should be a condition of all planning applications. Better still if the duct was provisioned by the developer to support multi-opeator working.

Positive as this news is it is a little depressing that 550 premises of FTTP is newsworthy. :(

Someone building 550 homes is almost newsworthy in itself, esp in W. Cumbria.
