40,000 milestone reached by Superfast Essex project
Tuesday 04 August 2015 22:12:30 by Andrew Ferguson

Onesie cabinets are starting to appear more and more and Essex has seen its first one go live recently in Dedham (cabinet 7 serving the High Street area). The announcement has been made at the same time as the county confirming it has reached its 40,000 milestone, putting it one third of the way towards meeting the eventual phase 2 project target and well on the way to completing phase 1.

Dedham already had cabinets 3 and 4 offering superfast speeds to premises in Stratford St Mary and the Brook Street area of Dedham and apparently another cabinet will be enabled in the next few months increasing coverage in the village.

"I am delighted at the arrival of new fast broadband in Dedham. I understand that this single cabinet is the first of its kind in Essex. The rollout of superfast broadband is a huge benefit to the people and businesses of Dedham and the surrounding areas."

Cllr Kevin Taylor, Parish Councillor for Dedham Village

The last major news from Essex was when it passed the 25,000 premises passed point and its phase 2 contract was signed, and since then coverage has grown and our tracking confirms that it is an extra 15,000 premises passed. The 40,000 premises are covered by the onesie and another 200 standard fibre cabinets delivered via the project.

Correction 20th November 2015: Some of the coverage figures were incorrect due to incorrect matching of postcodes to the district council areas, therefore we have updated the old data to avoid those searching seeing unusual jumps up/down in the figures.

Essex has an phase 1 goal of 87% fibre based coverage, so the current figure of 81.6% shows they are edging closer and Epping Forest once it sees the 4,500 premises from its contract with Gigaclear delivered will have around 1% with access to Gigabit speeds.
