The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP is moving onto new pastures after 13 months at the head of the DCMS as the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, so may still have a hand in how the digital economy is shaped. The replacement is John Whittingdale MP (Maldon constituency) who will now be the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, no official news yet on whether Ed Vaizey MP will remain in his role as Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy, this is the position he has held since 2010.
The constituency of Maldon with just 52% of premises able to access superfast fibre (56.2% fibre based) is well below overall coverage level for Essex which is 77.7%. The level of fibre coverage is 82.1% without the superfast speed qualifier, which is heading towards the target of 87% for the phase 1 contract. This 87% target is below the original 2015 90% superfast target, the phase 2 contract was signed in March 2015 which is aiming for up to 95% of Essex having access to superfast broadband. We suspect those desperate for better broadband in the Maldon area will now be hoping their MP will ensure they are not forgotten.
We have hunted for a twitter account for the new DCMS boss, but one is not listed anywhere and his website is still in purdah lockdown mode.
