Those looking for a bit more speed may have been frustrated over the recent £75 cashback offer from PlusNet on only the ADSL2+ services for the last week, but the fibre offer running until 12th May has added £50 cashback for up to 38 Mbps download fibre orders.
The fibre based offer has its first six months of broadband for free along with the £50 cashback offer. After the six months the broadband price returns to £14.99 in low cost areas, or £22.49 if outside the large low cost area. Voice line rental at £15.95 per month is a requirement.
Broadband offers often annoy existing customers, but PlusNet fibre customers now have the option of YouView TV which for £5 extra per month (and a new 18 month contract) gives you the choice of a full PVR YouView box (£7.99 delivery and £50 activation fee) or a basic pause/rewind YouView box (£5.99 delivery). The standard bundle includes 15 IPTV channels that form the Entertainment pack (including SyFy, Fox, Universal, History Channel, Eurosport and TLC), other channel packs are available in addition to the standard 70 or so Freeview channels. The £5 per month cost is not mentioned on the main sales page, but is specified on the price list.
PlusNet is recommending a 15 Mbps minimum line speed, and the YouView box needs an Ethernet connection, so if your existing broadband is no where near the TV you may find a pair of HomePlugs are useful to get broadband to the back of your TV.
While we know there will be those worried that more TV watching will squeeze capacity at the provider, it should be highlighted that watching the IPTV streams live will utilise multicast access across the network (multi-cast transmits the same data packet to lots of connections) and could see bandwidth demand drop. Multicast streaming is also why Openreach are so twitchy over error-rates across their FTTC services, since traditional streaming can buffer to handle the odd blip, but with multicast you only have one chance to capture the data.
For those not able to get fibre yet, the PlusNet TV service is not an option, but there is a new ADSL2+ offer of £50 cashback and £7.49 off the monthly standard price for the 12 month minimum term.
