Scotland declares 1.5 million households with access to fibre based broadband
Tuesday 24 February 2015 11:02:25 by Andrew Ferguson

The progress of fibre based broadband roll-outs in Scotland both commercial and Digital Scotland gap-funded is continuing and BT has declared that the combined total of commercial and funded roll-out has passed some 1.5 million premises (220,000 via Digital Scotland project).

"This is tremendous news for Scotland, and I'm delighted that 1.5m homes and businesses have now got access to a fast and reliable internet connection. The UK government is investing £100 million in superfast broadband for Scotland and our rollout has already reached more than 200,000 properties that the commercial rollout would not have covered."

UK Government Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey

BT via the Digital Scotland project and maybe some more commercial roll-out is aiming to reach a target of 85% fibre based broadband coverage by 2015/2016, extending to 95% by the end of 2017/2018. The work so far has enabled some 4,700 cabinets with fibre twins and 2,800 miles of fibre cable being used to connect them all up.

Looking at our own data tracking for Scotland we put the current fibre based broadband coverage at 74.5% of premises, or if you add the superfast qualifier 70.8%. Interestingly as yet we have not seen any native GEA-FTTP go live in Scotland yet.

There are quite a few new sites with native FTTP in Scotland. About 130 homes on Aberdeen West (NSWES) (Try Number 105/AB15 5EA).

This development is native FTTP also - Some 4000 or so homes.

No fibre available over here on the Highland West coast and I don't think it's availabe on the Isle of Skye yet.
Does the total for the Highlands include the well populated Outer Islands (Western Isles) too?

@21Again Western Isles (Na h-Eileanan an Iar) is currently zero.

You can try Address 11 MELBOURNE PLACE, GLASGOW, G40 3HL on Exchange BRIDGETON.

That has 330mbit and is part of the Athletes Village in Glasgow. Those properties had people moving into them from last Friday 20th Feb.

@ andrew - They can order both FTTC/P on the first address:

WBC FTTP Up to 330 Up to 30 -- Available

I assume the developer must have paid for this.

The second one is brand new and I only have the site/plot postcodes. But the houses are definitely FTTP (see

There's also around 700 homes in Glasgow (Commonwealth Games site) which are FTTP only. Try G40 4RN.

Will add them to the maths, which will make things slightly better.

There are other small pockets of FTTP - but the Commonwealth Games site and Chapleton seem to be the big two.

Here's the press release for the Chapleton site (says 8,000 homes) -

Have found some FTTP where people have pointed it out, but need to know the other postcodes for the Athletes village and also the Chapleton site will need me to do a search on new postcodes and NOTE we only count places that are live and seriously doubt 8,000 homes have been built yet.

Chapleton seems to have around 50 homes built/being built at present. Postcodes don't seem to be showing up on Royal Mail or BT yet though. Postcodes that I've found:

AB39 8AB (Greenlaw Road)
AB39 8AD (Wester Bell Rock Lane)
AB39 8AE (Hume Square)
AB39 8AF (Black Street)
AB39 8AG (Nether Cairnhill Drive)
AB39 8AH (Rothesay Street)
AB39 8AJ (Murray Street)
AB39 8AN (Bunting Place)

Until the postcodes are live with RoyalMail, thus Ordnance Survey not much we can do.

No idea how up to date this is? >

It is as up to date as the BT Wholesale checker, but is a simplified view so some of the nuances are missing.

New build and new postcodes, or even moved postcodes (some do shift a bit around with OS updates) make mapping fun :-)

I think Chapleton has more homes that have been built. There are three developers:

Good find on the postcodes, but from prior experience they are also liable to change!

When you look at the prices, you can see why this is a high end development site with FTTP.
